She loved you for your Ford Fiesta [Mar. 8th, 2007|12:07 am]
[Current Location |Castlewood Farm]

It's been a little while since I posted on here. For those of you who enjoy reading this, I'm sorry. For everyone else, er, hello again. I've been mostly spending my time on Facebook (it's too damn addictive, and I can access it at work), with Penny, doing stuff with the band (well, music to be precise), at the Fez, and other things along those lines. And work of course - 15 hours in the office every day makes finding time for LJ a bit tricky*.

I'm attempting to find a job in Brighton, though it's kinda dependent on Penny getting a job there too. And there's the 3 month notice period in my current job which I will attempt to get out of somehow, when I find somewhere new. Oh well, not planning on moving til the Summer, so it's not too much of an issue yet.

*I don't actually spend 15 hours a day in the office, I just wrote that in an attempt to gain some sympathy - "poor Phil, you work too hard, have some time off" etc.

[Current Music |Some Body - Send It]

The new Silver Sun album, as babbled about in previous entry, has finally been released, and is almost as good as I hoped, i.e. very good indeed.

Well done to all of you organised people who are sending cards. I don't expect to receive any, but will happily give and receive telepathic festive greeting. Happy Christmas to all of you in LJ-land. If any of you would like a Christmas card from me... er, maybe next year?

Festive Phil xx

I am a man, I'm a superstar, I shine so bright, a worldwide success [Nov. 29th, 2006|09:13 pm]
[Current Location |Castlewood Farm]
[Current Mood | lethargic]
[Current Music |The Cooper Temple Cluase - The Clan]

The new Silver Sun album, rather disconcertingly titled 'Dad's Weird Dream', was originally due for release in Septemer (September the 11th in fact). It was then put back to the end of October while it was being remixed by Nigel 'he of Radiohead production fame' Godrich. Then put back to November 20th. I went into HMV on the 20th, but no luck. I was told it would be out on the 27th. I reserved myself a copy, and went back on the 27th. Now it's due out on December the 4th. Come on you f*ckers, get a move on!

In the meanwhile I have bought myself the Charlatans singles album and the best of My Life Story in an attempt to send myself back to the 90s.

I've been listening a lot to the Long Blondes album, as it is, for my money, one of the best albums of the year, up there with the Arctic Monkeys and the Fratellis. Help, I think the NME are brainwashing me!

On the subject of the NME, Club NME in Reading bit the dust. Hehehe, a nationwide success, but Reading doesn't want to know. What a town we live in... To be fair, the promoters seemed a bit useless from what I've heard. Apparently someone else may be taking it on after Christmas (and the NME are actually going to make sure they're not a bunch of retards first. Bonus.)

Time Bomb bit the dust as well. To be honest, I'm not shedding many tears. It was beginning to become a burden on my weekends. In the end, not enough people turned up. Thanks to those of you who did though, it would have been a hell of a lot worse if it wasn't for you.

If you can't do it when you're young, when can you do it? [Oct. 12th, 2006|11:03 am]
[Current Location |Castlewood Farm]

[Current Music |Hefner - Good Fruit]

Club NME has arrived in Reading. Reading, it would appear, is not ready for Club NME. I went along last night on a spur of the moment decision with Jack and Ben, and to say the place was packed would be, well, a lie. The Heartwear Process and the Race were both good, but I've seen them before where they've been better in my opinion. The DJ was... well, would it be churlish for me to say 'not as good as the DJs on a Monday night'? The whole thing felt like a bit of a damp squib. Left at about half one with honourable intentions of getting some sleep and going to work in the morning. Then bumped into some random guy from Zimbabwe who called himself Fruitbat who started talking to us while we were walking home, and ended up drinking with him til, er, God knows when. 4am? 5am?

Didn't make it to work today, about which I kinda feel bad. Fortunately, my job isn't really a position of responsibility, so I don't think taking a day off will make a great deal of difference to the world. And if you can't do these things when you're young, when can you do them? (At this point, some of you may point out that at 24, I'm pushing the description of 'young', and should be acting more responsibly; to them I say 'fair point, but what you going to do about it?'.)

I dragged this lake, looking for corpses [Sep. 29th, 2006|01:21 am]

[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |Suede - Stay Together]

I had a birthday. It was good fun, ended up in the After Dark. I'll put some photos up, as and when I get then onto my computer. Got drunk, shouted 'YE BABAM YE!!' a lot, went to Ye Babam Ye... What more could you ask for?

Also in the last week I have seen Delays and Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly at the Fez. Delays were very good, better than I thought they would be. Get Cape... was also good. Didn't really know what to expect, as was pretty obvious my the fact that I thought the support band (Keith) was in fact the headline act. Oops. Won't be rushing out to buy their (his?) album, but enjoyed the gig.

Been listening to the Fratellis album a lot. I like it muchly; I'd compare it to the Kaiser Chiefs/Arctic Monkeys - not the most complex of tunes, but very good nonetheless, and a lot of fun.

The sheer pointlessness of my existence could probably be seen in the fact that one of the best things that has happened to me recently was getting my name in the Fiver. The Fiver, for those of you who don't know, if the Guardian's daily, highly tongue-in-cheek, football e-mail. I made it in (finally) last Thursday - you can see it here. It's right at the bottom, amidst the TV listings.

And finally, Time Bomb is back. The (re-)launch is this Saturday (30th), Face Bar. Only £1 with NUS. Indie/retro/f*cking about in the main room, rock/metal/no f*cking about in room 2. No prizes for guessing which one I'll be DJing in. It would be great to see as many of you there as can make it. Even the people who were unfortunate enough to come to the scarily empty one in the summer.

Stay real,
Phil xx

The book that you're reading is upside down [Sep. 10th, 2006|08:41 am]
[Current Location |Castlewood Farm]
[Current Mood | happy]
[Current Music |Penny's Lovecupboard - Wait]

Went to Year Zero in Camden on Friday night. I really like the idea of the night - they only play songs that are a year old or less. As soon as I read in their blurb 'Love The Killers but ready to commit bloody murder the next time you hear ‘Mr Brightside’?' I was sold :)

Went up there with Penny, also met up with Caz there - was good to see her again - and a load of her mates. We got there while the first band were on. They were called The Mescalitas, and sounded, much to my amusement (but not Penny's) very much like Penny's Lovecupboard (though, obviously, not as good). After them was a band called The Early Years, who sounded very much like Secret Machines. But not as good. I thought they were rather dull. And headlining were Captain, who I'd missed at Reading festival, but was quite interested in seeing. They were good - didn't blow me away, but kept me entertained the whole time; would definitely consider seeing them again.

I felt the venue rather let the night down though. It was at the Proud Gallery in Camden. I'd pictured it being somewhere like Notting Hill Arts Centre, some dark and dingy underground little club, but it was actually an art gallery, with a bar in a marquee on a roof terrace. The bar area was bigger than the main room though, and you couldn't hear the music in there. When the bands finished and the DJ started trying to get a dancefloor going, there didn't seem many people that interested, preferring to stay in the bar. I think there were people there who were there because they thought it was the cool place to be, rather than for the music. Including Kelly Osbourne.

In other news, Penny has got me tickets to see Silver Sun on Thursday for my birthday :) Really looking forward to that. The release of their new album (the horrendously titled Dad's Weird Dream) has been delayed though, while it's being mixed by Nigel Godrich (of Radiohead fame).

Also, despite my absence, FC Henely won 2-0 in their opening league game of the season.

There is only so much toast a man can eat [Sep. 1st, 2006|09:50 pm]
[Current Location |Castlewood Farm]
[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |Kharma 45 - Ecstasy]

Well, it's September, so I suppose I'd better celebrate the dawn of the new month with a blog post.

I went to V Fest. It was good. We got a bit wet on the Saturday, line up not amazing either. The Pipettes were very good though.

On Sunday the weather and the line-up was better. Pure Reason Revolution, Kula Shaker, Art Brut, and some band called Radiohead - you may have heard of them (although you may be confusing them with The Buggles, Jade Goody-style). We also got our shirts sign my Art Brut; I was wearing the t-shirt I got at the ULU gig, standard band merch; Martin on the other hand had an Art Brut shirt that he had made himself: him and some of his mates from back home have a 5-a-side football team, and they've called themselves Art Brut. The Brut were very impressed with this dedication, and the shirt, which they all declared was better than their official merchandise, and to top it off, Eddie Argos took a photo of Martin and the shirt on his (Argos's) phone. Not every day something like that happens.

After that, hearing Girls Aloud doing 'I predict a riot' seemed like a fairly standard thing to happen. 'Love machine' was wonderful as well, but we were right at the back of a packed tent. They blatantly should have been on the main stage. Beck was OK musically, but when you factor in his puppets performing on stage and his backing band doing percussion while having a meal it was a performance well worth seeing. Then Radiohead were, well, Radiohead. It was good to see them, though I was knackered by that point, and about halfway through the set was in need of some water and to rest my back - I guess I'm not as young as I was.

Then the following weekend I went to Reading festival. I saw some bands, I drank a lot, I bumped into some old friends who I hadn't seen in a while which was nice. Highlights: the Long Blondes, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Vines, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Hope of the States.

Neither festival really stood out as being 'a great weekend' though. I've been there done that a few too many times now. Festivals have kind of lost their appeal a bit. Although Glasto next year could be done. I didn't see many bands who I hadn't seen before either, it was all a bit too predictable. Not that I didn't enjoy either, but I've had better.

DJed at the Club NME festival afterparty on the Sunday night, which went on til 5am, which was OK at the time, but wore myself out completely, and picked up some kind of bug. Still feel a bit under the weather now which is not good.

In non-festival related news, I didn't make the 22 man squad for FC Henley, perhaps due to only being able to go to half of the training sessions due to DJing commitments and also missing both pre-season friendlies; perhaps due to the fact that I'm not very good. I'm still going to go along to training though, and who knows, I might still get a game sometime over the course of the season. I'm not going to shed any tears over it though, those 10.30am Sunday morning kick-offs are hardly the most appealing time.

Well, that was a beast of an entry. More to come soon (i.e. before October). It's been a while since the last update I know. This is due to my laptop being borrowed by Rob for the last week or so; oh, and the fact I went to a couple of festivals - did I mention them?

[Current Music |The Hives - Main Offender]

For those of you who don't already know of my V Festival ticket adventures, they are as follows:

(Background info: V Festival had two locations - Chelmsford in Essex, Weston Park in Staffordshire. It is commonly regarded as the 'dad-rock' festival, more commercial than Glastonbury, less RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAWWWWKKKKKKK than Reading/Leeds, somewhere you're more likely to find a clean toilet and less likely to get your tent burned down. There's a website here.)

Sometime a few days before tickets went on sale back in March (or whenever it was), Martin texted me to see if he could get tickets for us to go and see Radiohead on the Saturday at Chelmsford. I told him that this was no problem, I'd book them. The trouble was, I went out the night before tickets went on sale, got pretty drunk, ended up getting into work late and hungover.

Managed to get onto website selling tickets at 10:30am (they'd gone on sale at 9am). Saturday tickets at Chelmsford sold out. Weekend ticekts at Chelmsford sold out. How about Saturday tickets at Staffordshire? Still tickets left. Booked 2 tickets.

Oh.

Bugger.

Radiohead obviously playing Sunday at Staffordshire, since they were playing Saturday at Chelmsford. Went back on website. Ordered 2 day tickets for Sunday at Staffordshire.

Sorted. Not the most economical way to do it, but we were now doing the weekend at Staffordshire.

However, having 2 day tickets (as opposed to weekend tickets) means we couldn't get into the campsite. Don't really know the area at all but apparently the festival is in the middle of nowhere.

Sometime later checked on the internet for alternative places to stay near the festival - there were only 2 mentioned on the message boards I used - The Bradford Arms and White Pump Farm. Ah well, if worst came to the worst, we could always sleep in the car.

Earlier this week (yes, I know I left it late...), phoned to try to book camping. No answer at White Pump Farm. Bradford Arms all full up. Mum called me - she needs the car the Monday after the festival, so I can't take the car.

Bugger.

Tried White Pump Farm. Space available!!! Yay! Booked train tickets (after much swearing and screaming at the computer, eventually did it over the phone). So it looks like we've pulled it out of the bag. Still got to confirm the camping, and the train tickets still need to turn up looking right: on the phone, after giving the journey details to an automated system, I was put through to an operator who tried to sell me tickets going up at 7pm instead of 7am on the saturday, and coming back not on the 21st of August, but on the 23rd of October. Maybe I need elocution lessons. Maybe they should have a less useless system. So still scope for things to go wrong.

All in all though, I think it's sorted. Really looking forward to it. Might go to Reading Festival as well the weekend after, and have booked the week off in between for some much needed rest and recuperation.

Happy fake birthday to [info]metafisica

Hello all

It's time for my regular post to plug Time Bomb at Face Bar. Same details as the last two months. Hopefully this month will be less of a shambles than last time. I intended to write an entry about it, but I appear not to have. Ah well. It would be cool to see you down there.

Apart from that, life goes on. I've started training with a Sunday league football team (FC Henley, if anyone's interested), which is good fun, and has made me realise just what impact four years of drinking without excercise has done to my level of fitness, and it's not pretty.

And finally EDIT: There is no 'and finally' item here. I did have a picture of a notice asking students not to masturbate in the showers, but I seem to have lost it. Never mind.

[Current Music |Dirty Pretty Things - Last of the Small Town Playboys]

OK, OK, I know I promised an update back yonder in the mists of time. It's been a while, but here we go.

First up, Andrew has tagged me to do this meme thingy.

What do I find attractive in a girl? That's a tricky question - looking back over the girls I've had a thing for over the years, it's quite hard say that I have a 'type' that I go for. But I'll try doing this anyway...

Start with 10pts

+1 Smiles
+2 Smiles at ME
+1 Hair shoulder length or longer
+3 Would know a good time if it passed her in the street
+1 Likes a drink or two
+1 Irish accent
+1 Straight/slightly wavy hair (i.e. 80s perms are a big no)
+2 Good eyes (i.e. pretty eyes; I'm not asking for 20:20 vision - in fact, if she's going to go out with me, probably better if she hasn't)
+1 Lets me buy her drinks
+1 Likes music
+2 Likes 'good' music (i.e. similar stuff to what I like)
+5 Likes Alisha's Attic

-1 Vegetarian (not that I have a problem with vegetarians at all, but I'm not sure I'd want to go out with one)
-1 Brummie accent
-1 Expects me to buy her drinks
-1 Laughs at my dancing
-2 Pretends not to like pop music in attempt to seem 'cool', when I can SEE her Savage Garden albums on her shelf...
-2 Self-centred
-2 Compulsive liar
-3 Doesn't like my friends
-5 Supports Arsenal
-10 Starts fights in kebab shops
-1 Previously been out with someone I know
-3 Previously been out with one of my friends
-10 Previously cheated on one of my best mates

Well, that'll do. Should point out that I already have a wonderful girlfriend, so not looking for another one. That would be greedy. And somewhat unfaithful.

Went to see Silver Sun at the Luminaire in Kilburn last night. Can thoroughly recommend both the band (who I've seen twice before, and own all their albums) and the venue (was my first time there last night). Plenty of old favourites, some new stuff as well - new album out sometime this year, yay!

On the way out was given a flier for this. It's on the 18th September, which is a few days before my birthday, and I'm toying with the idea of going for my birthday. On the other hand, it's on a Monday night in London. Anyone fancy it?

Finally, thank you to evveryone who came to Time Bomb and/or Mr Vain's 90s night. The former was a bit of a shambles this month (not the fault of the DJs), but will hopefully be back on its feet next month. The latter rocked!

TONIGHT (Tuesday): Mr Vain's 90s Night [Jun. 27th, 2006|03:54 am]
[Current Mood | excited]
[Current Music |Dodgy - Staying Out For The Summer]

Hi Kids

Tonight (Tuesday) is Mr Vain's 90s Night at the Fez, Reading.

Myself, along with fellow DJs Uncle McChuckle and Spin D Matt (or Andrew and Matthew to their respective mothers), will attempt to play an entire night of tunes from the 90s that will make you think 'Oh yeah, I remember this!'. From Echobelly to Erasure, from Haddaway to Hurricane ..1, you can bet there'll be something that brings back memories of that glorious decade that we like to call the nineties. There's also a prize for the most 90s looking attire, so dust off your Kappa tracksuit, and join us in the Fez.

There's also a student night going on in the main room, but that will suck goats' balls compared to us.

See you there!

Frankie Fernandez (a.k.a. Phil) xx

Proper blog update, in which I won't just be trying to persuade you to go somewhere I'm DJing, will follow in a few days.

[Current Music |Soulwax - Too Many DJs]

It's been about a month since I last posted. I know this because the last time I posted I was trying to get people down to the Face Bar for Time Bomb, and now I'm, well, doing the same. So:

Saturday 24th June (as a general rule it's the last saturday of every month)

The Face Bar, Ambrose Place, off Chatham Street, Reading (that's here)

£3.50 with NUS/£4 without before 11pm, £5 after 11pm

Indie, Rock, Alternative, Retro, Metal, Classics

If youre interested, you can check out http://www.turbulentsoundscape.com/ who I guess are the promoters (although I wasnt much the wiser after a quick glance there, as they seem to be involved in so much stuff).

Any questions, gimme a shout, if youre up for a night out, it would be good to see you down there.

Big big thank yous to those of you who came down last time, it was great to see you there and have some moral support. Hope you all enjoyed it, all the feedback I've had has been positive. I'm now involved as a regular - so expect more hassling from me to go down there :)

Also, Mr Vain's 90s Night, a one-off courtesy of me, Andrew and Matt, is at the Fez on Tuesday. Everythng fom Cast to Corona (well, no promises of playing either of those two artists, but along those lines). Watch this space for more details. It promises to be a lot of fun.

Attention everyone

Im DJing at Time Bomb at the Face Bar in Reading, Saturday 27th. For those of you who aren't entirely sure where that is, there's a map here.

Im DJing in room one, which is described as:
RETRO STYLE A mix of new and old bands with a retro style and sound.
Theres a list of bands as well, but I cant be bothered to list them.

Room 2 is Rock/Metal, for those of you with a stronger disposition than me.

Im not sure how long Im gonna be DJing for, well see. It would be lovely to have some moral support and if enough people turn up I might get paid as well ;)
Im quite prepared to play some tunes to an empty room and get paid diddly squat though, so dont feel guilty if you cant make it.

The details you need to know:

Saturday 27th May

The Face Bar, Ambrose Place , off Chatham Street, Reading

£3.50 with NUS/£4 without before 11pm, £5 after 11pm

Indie, Rock, Alternative, Retro, Metal, Classics

If youre interested, you can check out http://www.turbulentsoundscape.com/ who I guess are the promoters (although I wasnt much the wiser after a quick glance there, as they seem to be involved in so much stuff).

Stemming, presumably, from a conversation a few weeks ago with Dunc, Fi and Andrew about hair colour, I had a dream the other night that someone had designed a colour chart, like they have for paints (i.e. Vivid Scarlet, Cool Aquamarine, all that bollocks), which had every possible shade of hair colour, and a name for each; and that this girl Sarah who I knew from halls had a shade of brown hair defined as 'German Library'.

Take a look at your LJ friends list, then list up to ten things you want to say to ten different LJ friends...DO NOT state who these people are. DO NOT confirm nor deny any "comment speculation".

1. I wish I'd met you earlier in my life.
2. I have a lot of respect for you. Sometimes I wish I was more like you. At other times, I'm glad I'm not.
3. I want to see you more.
4. I want to see more of you ;)
5. If I was to invent a comic book heroine, I would base it on you.
6. I fancy your userpic :p
7. I was once attempting to chat up a girl in a club, when I realised she reminded me of you. I found this somewhat off-putting.
8. I know your middle name :p
9. You intrigue me. And simultaneously annoy me. I think the two are linked.
10. I hope you're OK; though I have a horrible feeling that you're not.

Recently I feel like I haven't sat still for about a month, and could do with a break. Having said that, I have had some time off recently, I went home for Easter, I went to Shropshire for a few days, and then the Wye Valley this weekend just gone. But then whenever I come back to Reading I find that my life is in the same sorry mess that I left it in before I went away. I'm a bit disillusioned with both my job and the club night at the moment. Neither seem to be going in any positive direction particularly fast.

Anyway, on a more positive note, Becky has provided me with lots of pictures of the holiday in Shropshire, so here are a few for your enjoyment:

EDIT: the pictures are a managable size now hopefully.

8 Random Things About Me Meme. Blame [info]metafisica

1. I do not have a tax textbook dedicated to me. One of my Grandad's novels is dedicated to me, my sister and my cousin though. I can't remember which one, but I think it's 'A Ticket to One's Own Funeral'; which I recommend you all read.

2. I don't take mind altering drugs every day. I'm currently trying to cut down on alcohol, especially during the week.

3. I have never gotten on a plane without a passport. Also, I dislike the word 'gotten'. I think it's due to having an American English teacher in first year of secondary school, who got on my nerves.

4. No-one has ever wanted to train me as an Olympic diver. I recently came to the conclusion that I should have come to long ago, that I am crap at sport. All sport.

5. I don't have an obsessive compusion about always having the door shut. At home (back in Cumbria) I used to have my bedroom door open mostly, since it jammed on the carpet, and didn't shut properly unless you put some proper effort into it. I also liked having an open door when I was in hall, as this was a good way of meeting people at first, and seeing who was around after that. I was fortunste to be in halls before they put in those things that automatically close the doors.

6. I have never seen Radiohead live, but I've booked tickets for V festival this summer, so I should see them then.

7. I prefer my toast warm, and often with cheese. I got a bit of a reputation in my last house as an expert cheese toastie maker.

8. I'm wearing jeans at the moment. They're my favourite pair, though I've had them a while now and they're beginnig to fall apart. There's a small hole developing in an area that holes in trousers aren't advised, but I think I can still get away with wearing them.

That'll do for now. I'm off to Shropshire for a few days for a well earned holiday, I may update when I get back.
